Essence Arts

Gender Essence found Essence Arts primarily using art to promote awareness. Essence Arts uses art, film, photography and spoken word as a medium to address issues around gender identity.

Founded in 2012 we displayed art over a two week period and at a central location in Belfast City, exhibiting work of a personal nature on the subject of gender.

The exhibition sent a loud message to society about the restrictions imposed by traditional concepts of what gender is and how one should behave. It forced us to examine who we think we are, what we think we are, how we are seen by others and what really matters. An intimate exploration of gender, often oppositional in nature and at other times aesthetics disguise the true reality behind the sketch or painting, photograph or sculpture. It is about pain, joy, conflict, sadness and acceptance. It is about life: being human and being accepted in all our vulnerabilities and capabilities.
